To make great chocolate, you need sustainably sourced cocoa.
That’s why we are proud to be a part of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan launched in 2009 better farming, better lives – and better cocoa.
To make great chocolate, you need great cocoa.
Sustainably sourced cocoa
All our breakfast cereals and bars carrying the Nestle Cocoa Plan and the Rainforest Alliance cocoa seal contain sustainably sourced cocoa. The Nestlé Cocoa Plan is helping to improve farming practices, and the lives of cocoa-farming families. Find out more at ra.org.
Better Farming
Supporting Best Practices
Farmers are offered training to help them reduce disease in crops, improve bean quality and productivity, and manage sustainable land use.
Providing Resources
An important part of the programme is providing farmers with support to maximise their crops. This includes supporting them with more efficient harvesting tools and methods.
Supporting Rewarding Farming
We are helping farmers to gain the most value from their produce at market, to diversify their crops and to help them become more resilient.
Better Lives
Access to Quality Education
Education is critical to helping a child achieve his or her potential, providing an alternative to working in the field and broadening opportunities for the future. This is why the Nestlé Cocoa Plan is supporting the construction and the rehabilitation of schools in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.
Aiming to tackle child labour risks
Cocoa-farming communities face challenges, including widespread rural poverty, increasing climate risks and a lack of access to financial services and basic infrastructure like water, health care and education. These complex factors contribute to the risk of child labour on family farms. Find out more about the actions we have implemented including the launch in 2012 of the Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana that is today an industry standard.
Women empowerment and community engagement
When women can read, communities’ benefit. Maternal literacy is a key factor in improving nutrition, reducing child mortality, and reducing child labour risks. This is why we are putting in place different actions to engage women on alternative income or offer popular literacy schemes. Involving communities as a whole is also key. Our collaboration with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) is instrumental to engage communities and empower women.
Better Cocoa
Growing Better Beans
Great tasting chocolate comes from quality beans. From bean to breakfast cereal and bar, we believe in producing a product that benefits everyone.
Managing the Supply Chain
We're transforming the supply chain from one which has no traceability and layers of middlemen to one which is shorter and transparent.
Forest Positive Cocoa
Forest Positive means moving beyond just managing deforestation risks in our supply chain to target a positive impact on our broader sourcing landscapes. Addressing deforestation risks in cocoa supply chains is complex and requires a concerted approach. Our forest protection and restoration approach on the Cavally forest reserve is a good example of how a concerted and community approach can deliver positive impact.
